Energy management in industrial facilities involves more than tracking electricity consumption. Maintaining power factor, adapting to changing loads and controlling investment costs are also important objectives. This makes the operation and suitability of the power factor correction system particularly relevant.

Electronic reactive power control solutions using high-speed semiconductor electronic switches offer an alternative to conventional contactor- or thyristor-switched correction panels. In our field experience at Canel Elektrik İnşaat, we have observed that, under suitable conditions, this approach can offer advantages in both power factor performance and total purchase cost.

Why are different correction solutions considered?

Motors, drives and other equipment switch in and out at different times in production facilities. These changes can affect inductive or capacitive reactive power requirements. Appropriate system response is important for maintaining the target power factor.

Conventional systems can provide this control through contactor- or thyristor-switched stages. Alternative electronic solutions may use different methods of reactive power control, depending on how the equipment operates.

There is no single correct solution for every facility. Existing infrastructure, load profile, harmonic levels and operating conditions must be assessed to select a suitable system.

Field result: annual average cos φ of 0.998

At one facility where Canel Elektrik İnşaat implemented a solution, the annual average power factor (cos φ) was 0.998. The target was 1.0, which was reached for much of the operating time.

This result shows that the solution kept the facility’s power factor close to the target. Evaluating this kind of performance data is important for understanding how a correction system performs under actual operating conditions.

The results cannot be directly generalised to every facility. Load characteristics, equipment selection, sizing and measurement conditions can affect performance.

What advantages can electronic reactive power control offer?

In suitable applications, alternative electronic solutions may offer several advantages over conventional correction systems:

  • Capacitive and inductive reactive power control: Managing reactive power balance in both directions according to facility requirements.
  • Precise power factor tracking: Helping maintain cos φ close to the specified target.
  • Lower purchase cost: Potential reductions in total equipment and system investment in suitable projects.
  • Simplified installation: More straightforward installation and integration where solutions are compatible with existing infrastructure.
  • Power quality management: Supporting assessment and management of power quality issues according to the system’s technical functions.

Some newer solutions may reduce or eliminate capacitor use. In systems using capacitors, failures and overheating can create fire risks. Any benefits from eliminating capacitors should therefore be assessed separately. This advantage should be stated definitively only when the implemented system’s technical structure has been verified.

Reactive power control alone does not imply harmonic filtering or neutral-current reduction. These outcomes depend on whether the equipment actually supports those functions and on the facility’s electrical characteristics.

Is the same correction method suitable for every factory?

No. A solution that is technically and economically beneficial in one facility may not produce the same results elsewhere. Existing correction panels, load profile, reactive power behaviour, harmonic levels and operating conditions should be reviewed before a decision.

At Canel Elektrik İnşaat, we evaluate different electrical infrastructures and alternative application methods in industrial projects. Our field observations show that electronic reactive power control can be considered as an alternative under suitable conditions.

The right correction solution should reach the target cos φ while adapting to operating conditions, meeting technical requirements and offering advantages in total investment cost.

Canel Elektrik İnşaat contributes to identifying appropriate solutions through engineering assessments of industrial electrical infrastructure and energy management needs.
