Case Study | Industrial Electrical Design
Imagine setting up a pharmaceutical factory. Your production lines have been defined, your architectural plans are ready, and you have begun selecting manufacturing equipment. Yet there is no operating facility. The electrical infrastructure must be designed to supply every piece of equipment, from production machines and chillers to boilers and pumps.
Where does a factory’s electrical design begin?
At Canel Elektrik İnşaat, we approach industrial electrical design by first understanding the customer’s production objectives and the facility’s technical requirements.
1. From production requirements to total power calculations
The first stage is to collect a list of electrical equipment and its rated power requirements. Production machines, chillers, boilers, pumps and other auxiliary systems are assessed to establish the facility’s electrical needs.
This work forms the basis for determining transformer capacity and the main power distribution system. Installed load, demand load, simultaneous operation and equipment starting requirements are considered together.
A sound electrical design begins with understanding how the facility will operate, rather than simply adding up machine ratings.
2. Translating architectural plans into electrical designs
Once the power analysis is complete, electrical systems are designed alongside the architectural layout. Machine positions, electrical panel locations, distribution routes and supply points for mechanical equipment are defined.
Depending on the facility’s needs, the design covers medium- and low-voltage distribution, main and sub-distribution panels, feeder lines, final circuits and connection points. Cable tray routes are planned in coordination with other disciplines.
Electrical infrastructure is therefore integrated with production areas from the initial design stage, instead of being shaped only after the factory has been completed.
3. Which systems are included in a factory’s electrical design?
Industrial electrical design extends beyond power distribution. Different systems must be designed to work together according to the facility’s operating requirements.
The principal systems considered within Canel Elektrik İnşaat’s design scope include:
- Power distribution: Medium voltage, transformers, low-voltage distribution and electrical panels.
- Machine and mechanical supplies: Power connections for production machines, chillers, boilers and pumps.
- Lighting and socket systems: Requirements of production areas, technical rooms, offices and shared spaces.
- Earthing and lightning protection: Protection systems suited to the facility’s design requirements.
- Low-current systems: CCTV, data, access control, emergency announcements and other required infrastructure.
- Automation and energy monitoring: Control, monitoring and automation infrastructure as specified in the project scope.
Plans, diagrams, routes and equipment schedules are prepared to form the project’s technical documentation.
4. From design to panel manufacturing: completing the technical details
An important stage of electrical design is preparing the technical documents required for panel design.
Single-line diagrams, outgoing circuit information and equipment schedules are produced for main and sub-distribution panels. These provide the technical basis for the panel manufacturer to develop the manufacturing design correctly.
Coordination between electrical design and panel manufacturing helps power distribution, protective devices and site connections progress consistently.
5. What distinguishes a good electrical design?
Every factory has different production processes, machinery and technical requirements. A uniform approach is therefore insufficient for industrial electrical design.
At Canel Elektrik İnşaat, we place emphasis on understanding customer requirements, carefully reviewing project details and coordinating different disciplines.
We consider project components as a whole, from power calculations and panel diagrams to cable trays and low-current systems. Close communication with the customer helps us respond promptly to emerging requirements.
A factory’s electrical infrastructure begins to take shape with the first engineering decisions, before the first machine is commissioned. A well-planned design provides a technical roadmap for installation and supports infrastructure suited to the facility’s needs.
At Canel Elektrik İnşaat, we translate industrial production requirements into engineering solutions through electrical design.
